| Information on the village of Tyndrum on the West Highland Way in Scotland UK. |
|
Tyndrum, from the Gaelic, 'Tigh an Druim' meaning ‘the house on the ridge’, is about five miles north of Crianlarich. It is one of the biggest and busiest villages on the WHW and probably one of the oldest, as it sits on the crossing of the ancient drove roads from the north and from the west. The village was a lead mining centre and boomed during the 19th Century when someone struck gold at Cononishand, just to the south of Tyndrum. Old timers say there is still gold and lead to be found in the surrounding area and not that long ago an amateur prospector 'panned' enough gold to make his 'intended' a wedding ring. Rob Roy had a narrow escape at Tyndrum when a party of his pursuers went to the village Inn. As they entered the front door Rob, warned by a villager - was leaving by the back door.
