Information on the village of Rowardennan on the West Highland Way in Scotland UK.

The small village of Rowardennan on the east shore of Loch Lomond, nestles at the foot of Ben Lomond. The Ben has a well worn path to its summit and offers spectacular views all round the 'Loch Lomond and Trossacks National Park' area, on a clear day almost all of central Scotland can be seen from its summit. Ben Lomond, which translates as 'Mount Luminous' is 974m ( 3,193 ft ), and is the most southerly of the Munro's ( hills standing at over 3,000 ft ).

Rowardennan is a very small village but boasts a grand, beautifully situated youth hostel. It also has a research and teaching laboratory field station on Loch Lomondside run by Glasgow University since 1946, making it the first of its kind of any British University.

The area around Rowardennan is Rob Roy country. One of Rob Roy's sons, brought a kidnapped heiress to the Rowardennan Inn and forced her to go through a ceremony of marriage; a plot for which he was hanged in Edinburgh. The Inn served as a wayside halt for the drovers who brought their highland cattle across the loch by ferry on their way to the markets of Stirling and Falkirk - the ferry still runs today during the summer months.

The road along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond stops at Rowardennan, the only way to continue along the shore - is on foot.
