| Information on the village of Bridge of Orchy on the West Highland Way in Scotland UK. |
|
The village of 'Bridge of Orchy' lies at the head of Glen Orchy and simply takes its name from the bridge built in 1751 by the military over the River Orchy. The river is popular today with canoeists and white water rafters and is said to have superb salmon and trout fishing. The village is a welcome site after the wild bleakness of Rannoch Moor, sitting as it does right on the edge of the moor - like a small coastal village on the shore of the sea. Coming from Rannoch Moor the first building walkers meet is the Bridge of Orchy train station, which is on the West Highland Railway. The line is 140 miles ( 225 km ) from Craigendoran, near Helensburgh in central Scotland, to Fort William. The route is reckoned to be one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world.
