The Highlands are the most northerly region of mainland Great Britain and span an area of 25,000 sq km / 9,653 sq miles - one third of the landmass of Scotland and one-eighth of Great Britain. It is 10 times larger than Luxembourg, 20% larger than Wales and about the same size as Belgium. It stretches 209 miles / 337 km from Dunnet Head in the north, to Dalwhinnie in the south and is 190 miles / 306 km wide from Ardnamurchan in the west, to Auldearn in the east. Only 4% of the population of Scotland live within the Highlands the overall density is the lowest of any region in the European Community having 8 people per sq km / 20 people per sq mile, compared to a Scottish average of 66 persons per sq km / 170 per sq mile. The population of the highlands is about 209,000 the highest number for more than a century The largest city in the N. East, is Aberdeen ( pop:c 206,000 ). 80% of Scots live in the central lowlands in cities like Edinburgh ( pop:c 449,000 ) - Glasgow ( pop:c 577,000 ) - Dundee ( pop:c 100,000 ). |
