8. Although the WHW is a very safe route, always keep presence of mind and pay attention to your own personal safety and the safety of those in your group. Avoid the temptation to swim in the lochs along the route, many of them have treacherous underwater currents and the water is normally very cold even on hot days. Don't go too near the edge of cliffs, watch your footing especially in wet weather, get your drinking water from safe sources or buy bottled water. Taking water from streams is not advisable, but if you do, it must be purified, or thoroughly boiled to kill harmful bacteria.
See the | Hints n Tips | for more information.

14. The best midge repellent is the one that works for you - so the 'best one' may vary from one group of individuals to another. Trial and error is the only way for a walker to find the repellent that works best. When asked for our advice Albawest recommends a Scottish DEET free product called 'Shoo' - a highly effective Scottish midge repellent for most folk.
See the | Midge Rpellents Page| for more information.

20. Numbers of walkers do trek from Fort William south to Milngavie, but the simple reason for traveling North is that the sun is behind you, and the prevailing wind is at your back or rear left flank, not in your face, so if it does get windy and the wind carries rain ( as it frequently does in Scotland ), you won't find the experience too unpleasant.
